The DICE (Design, Innovate, Communicate, Entertain) Awards honor achievements in the video game industry. This year’s event saw Blizzard’s popular title Overwatch sweep several categories. The first-person shooter won a total of four awards, including the Game of the Year title.
Six nominations, four wins
Overwatch was nominated for six awards, of which it won four. These include Game of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Game Design, Outstanding Achievement in Online Gameplay, and Action Game of the Year.
The two other categories in which Overwatch was nominated — Outstanding Achievement in Animation and Outstanding Technical Achievement — were won by Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.
While it was an amazing success, this wasn’t the first time Overwatch took home a Game of the Year honor. At last year’s Game Awards in Los Angeles, Overwatch won the trophy for the Best Esports Title. The game beat four other nominees, namely Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Dota 2, League of Legends, and Street Fighter V, by demonstrating “creative and technical excellence” on its gameplay and community support.
A successful product from the start
Since Overwatch launched last May, its popularity has grown exponentially.
Its audience grew by millions across all platforms, including PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. The game attracted 15 million fans by August, 20 million by October, and five million more by January 2017, reaching a total crowd of 25 million in about eight months.
Moreover, last June, Overwatch topped League of Legends as the most-played game in South Korean internet cafes. It was an astonishing achievement, especially considering how new the game was at that point. It was also the first time in four years that a game outshone League of Legends in Korean cafes.
Overwatch has also seen great success in terms of revenue. According to a recent report by SuperData, the game generated almost $800 million in digital revenue last year.
New Overwatch league set to launch this year
While there have been quite a few Overwatch tournaments since its release, 2017 will see the launch of a new Overwatch league. Teams will be based in major cities around the world, ensuring fans will have regional teams to support.
The new league model is planned somewhat differently than the traditional setup of esports tournaments. For increased sustainability, once teams claim their spots in the league, those spots will be secured. Additionally, to create a stable ecosystem, players will receive a minimum salary and benefits package.
With all these recent developments and future growth prospects, Overwatch is on the perfect path to become a top-tier esports title this year.
